All about Chrysoberyl Cat’s Eye

Generally a Cat’s Eye Gemstone is polished into a cabochon that displays a narrow band of concentrated light going across the length of the stone.  The narrow band of light is caused by fine and slender parallel mineral fibres in the gemstone causing light to reflect in a single band.  This effect is known as the chatoyancy or the cat’s eye effect.  Chrysoberyl Cat’s Eye is the best known cat’s eye available.  Chrysoberyl Cat’s Eye have the most distinct cat’s eye effect of all gemstones.

The value of a Cat’s Eye gemstone is determined by clarity and intensity of the cat’s eye band.  A bright band and straight light effect is most desired.  When the band is strong and perfect it will be highly valued.  When the cat’s eye effect is weak, appearing as a billowy, floating reflection of light it is known as the cymophane effect.  Chrysoberyl with the cymophone effect is known as Cymophane.

Chrysoberyl Cat ’s Eyes are not treated or enhanced and are mined in Brazil, India, China, and Zimbabwe.
